Rohtang Pass and Valley
It is a famous mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. This high-altitude Rohtang Pass connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh.

During my one-day trip, I experienced it all—snowfall, rain, hailstorms, and lightning. Maybe God was kind to me. Here, the sound of the thunder echoes with immense intensity.

For a quieter, year-round alternative to Rohtang La Pass, many travellers use the Atal Tunnel to cross into the Lahaul Valley.

How to Get a Permit
Only vehicles with a valid Rohtang La Pass permit are allowed to drive up to the pass. You can secure your Rohtang permit online through the official portal.

- Accessibility: Typically open from May to November. A mandatory online pass is required for vehicles, managed by the District Kullu Administration

- Route & Closures: The road is highly adventurous, with challenging hairpin curves, and is usually open from May to October. It is strictly closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.

At the top of Rohtang Pass, near the vehicle parking area, you will find refreshments like Maggi and some snacks. However, the best advice is to eat something before leaving your room and pack some food to take with you. Also, keep a sufficient stock of water bottles with you.
Local Travel Tips
If Rohtang Pass is open during your trip, many travellers combine both routes. You can head up to Rohtang Valley early in the morning to enjoy the high-altitude views, drive down the back coordinates to Gramphu, and then loop back to Manali via Sissu and the Atal Tunnel. This gives you the ultimate circle tour of the mountains.
