Welcome to the ‘City of Stepwells’

Bundi is a beautiful historical city in Rajasthan known as the “City of Stepwells”. It is famous for its grand palaces, blue houses, and ancient forts that show the rich culture of the Rajputs. Many people visit to see the stunning wall paintings and the peaceful lakes around the town.

  • Bundi’s Foundation: The town was indeed founded in 1342 by Rao Deva Hada, who took over the region from the local Meena tribe chieftain named Jaita Meena. The city is named after an earlier tribal chief called Bunda Meena.
  • Raniji ki Baori: This stunning stepwell is the largest in Bundi. It was built in 1699 by Rani Nathavati Ji Solanki, who was the younger queen of Raja Anirudh Singh.
  • 84-Pillared Cenotaph: Located in the village of Devpura, this monument (Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri) was commissioned in 1683 by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh. It was built as a highly emotional tribute to honour his foster brother, Deva.
  • The Rudyard Kipling Connection: The British author stayed at the Sukh Mahal (also called Sukh Niwas Mahal) on the edge of Jait Sagar Lake during the late 19th century. He famously described the Bundi Palace as “the work of goblins rather than of men” in his travel writings, and the peaceful environment heavily inspired his legendary novel, Kim.
